David Caputo is a rising junior at the University of Michigan and a player with the University of Michigan Men’s Rugby Football Club(UMRFC). David joined UMRFC as a freshman, having played rugby in high school at St. John’s Prep in Massachusetts and with the Mystic River Rugby Club.

Looking for a way to volunteer in 2011, Caputo came across a surprising statistic: 61 percent of low-income families in the U.S. have no books in their home for their school-aged children. David saw the need and realized he could help. Setting up a donation box at his church, he quickly collected 1,500 used books, which were donated to low-income programs throughout his home town, including Girls Inc. Since then, David and his sister, brother and mother have collected and distributed nearly 10,000 books in support of literacy.

During the 2016 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) on June 4-5, The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company (Penn Mutual) honored David Caputo with the Penn Mutual Life of Significance Award. The award will be given annually to a collegiate rugby player participating in the CRC. The recipient exemplifies Penn Mutual’s values of integrity, commitment and respect, and has made substantial contributions to society and their community.
