Maury Stewart

Maurice L. Stewart first joined Penn Mutual as an agent in Topeka, Kansas in 1952 and spent 31 of his 65 years in the industry as a top performing general agent in their Philadelphia agency. In 1999, Maury rejoined Penn Mutual as an executive consultant, applying his unique blend of industry knowledge, field experience and sales expertise to assist with distribution growth and recruiting initiatives.

In addition to running a top Penn Mutual agency for many years, Maury earned 12 President’s Awards and was named president of Penn Mutual’s General Agents’ Association twice. Maury also held numerous leadership positions in the General Agents’ and Managers’ Association (GAMA) and was inducted into their International Hall of Fame. His involvement in the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) earned him the 2003 President’s Cup Award and a place in the Philadelphia Life Underwriters’ Hall of Fame. In 2004, the New York Round Table also recognized him with its Life Achievement Award.

Maury was a longtime consultant to The American College of Financial Services and served as a director of its Chartered Leadership Fellow program as well as co-chair of the Charles E. Drimal, CLU®, ChFC®, MSFS, Professorship. In May of 1999, he was named to the George Joseph Chair of Management, an endowed chair at The American College. In 2012, Maury was inducted into The American College Hall of Fame, and earned the College’s highest honor, the Solomon Huebner Gold Medal Award.

In 2013, inspired in part by Huebner’s book, The Economics of Life Insurance, Maury authored The Miracle Business: A Lifetime of Lessons on Leadership, which details his remarkable career in the life insurance business and his steadfast belief in life insurance as a miracle tool.

Known for his humility, wit, wisdom and inspirational leadership, Maury passed away in 2022 at the age of 93.
