The Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship Breaks Records
I hope you were as excited as I was by the play at this year’s Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship! It was the biggest tournament yet with 88 teams participating, including the Men’s and Women’s Championship, the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) Championship, and the high school playoffs.
The Penn Mutual CRC also saw its highest attendance. The two-day attendance of 27,244 is a new event record and Saturday’s attendance also set a new single-day attendance record for the event, at 14,846. Plus, there were over 10 hours of national broadcast coverage showcasing the weekend of rugby action.
Rugby is growing, and Penn Mutual is proud to be a part of it!
The off-field activities were equally fun. From the team dinner on Wednesday at the Reading Terminal Market, to the final match on Sunday, we were thrilled to meet so many players, coaches, family members and fans. It was great to host Madison Hughes for the event, our Penn Mutual brand ambassador and one of our two sponsored U.S. national team players.
Congratulations to California, for its fourth consecutive Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship title, and to Jesse Millner for being named the Most Valuable Player. Congratulations also to Life University for winning the Women’s Championship and to New Mexico Highlands University for winning the NSCRO title.
We also announced David Caputo as this year’s recipient of the Penn Mutual Life of Significance Award. This award is presented annually to a collegiate rugby player participating in the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship who best exemplifies Penn Mutual’s values of integrity, commitment and respect. You will be hearing more from him in a future post.
